I can’t imagine why, but people are actually visiting here looking for technical help with BitTorrent. I turned up this little factoid while analyzing Google search terms that brought people to my site. Since I’m such a nice guy, I’m going to give you some help.
First off, do not download illegal files. It’s illegal. And the MPAA kills a kitten everytime you do. Anyway…
Here’s a nice list of common BitTorrent IO Error messages and the common solutions. (These may not apply to clients other than the original BitTorrent client.)

- [Errno 9] Bad file descriptor
- This occurs if your operating system or UNIX filesystem cannot support files larger than 4 GB, and you try to download a file larger than 4 GB. The only way to fix this is to upgrade the operating system. This mostly affects Windows 98 and Windows ME; you will need to use Windows 2000 or Windows XP to download this file. This error can also be caused by filesystem corruption. Run Scandisk and then defragment your hard drive and try again.
- [Errno 13] Permission denied
- On Windows, this means another downloader is already running on this torrent. Close the other downloader (hint: try looking under Processes in the Task Manager) and try again. On Unix/Mac OS X, and very rarely on Windows, this means the torrent files are owned by another user, and you do not have permission to access them.
- [Errno 28] No space left on device
- Your hard drive does not have enough space to download the complete file. Delete some files to free up more space and then try downloading again, or try downloading to another drive (if you have one).
Hm, those are the common ones. There are all sorts of other errors and warnings you might receive with BitTorrent, but they don’t say IO Error in them, so I don’t care about them. Try copying and pasting the error message into Google. You’ll be amazed at what you find.

[Errno 28] No space left on device when downloading files over 4 gig in size may be because you are using fat32 instead of NTFS. fat32 does not support large files.

I have started getting Error 9 – bad file descriptors – on a regular basis. I am using Win98 but the files are siginificantly smaller than 1GB, let alone 4GB. I’ve had luck in the past by re-downloading the .torrent file and linking it to my partial download, but now that’s not working either.
Any other reasons why I might be getting this error message? And/or what I could do about it?
thanks

jdouge, it could be filesystem corruption. Try running scandisk then defrag and see if things clear up.

Bravo! Success on the first try. Guess I better scandisk more than once every two or three months :)

Running Scandisk for ” [Errno 9] Bad file descriptor ” fixed it up great, and I didn’t have to upgrade my operating system like it says here (I have Windows ME).
Thanks a million.

Nick, try upgrading to the latest BitTorrent client, and restarting the computer. That’s about all I can think of right now.

Hello, I have a doubt: I have been getting the mistake of error 9 , and i may think it is because of filesystem corruption. I have run scandisk but the it says “scandisk has re-iniciate 10 times because somre programs are writting on C unit”.
I close all programs and start scandisk again. However, i get the same message again. Someone knows how to solve this?
Michael Hampton

Myotis, before you run scandisk, use Ctrl+Alt+Del and close all programs except Explorer and Systray. Then run scandisk. Once it’s complete, restart your computer.

While downloading a 2.4 GB torrent I get this error “Error: Data Missing C\….\Eric Clapton – Delaney And Bonnie And Friends(With Eric Capton) – 02 – Poor Elijah – Tribute To Johnson Medley Poor Elijah Tribute.mp3″. Though I find the file in the specified location on my HDD, I see it cannot be renamed or deleted due to its abnormally large filename (130 charcters) which is possibly causing all the trouble. I have selected “do not download” for the whole folder, but it did not help. I am stuck after 1.2 GB (previously got stuck with the same torrent at 186 and 533 MB) and is in a total fix. Please help if you can

CrazyDiamond, you didn’t say whether you were using Windows 95 (or 98 or ME) or Windows NT (or 2000 or XP). I’m going to guess it’s Win9x, though.
Even though FAT32 and NTFS both support filenames up to 255 characters in length, Windows will only support up to 260 characters in the entire path on FAT32. (The same for FAT16.) NTFS supports pathnames up to 32767 characters, and it’s unlikely you’ll ever see that.
If this seems to describe your situation, try downloading to an NTFS filesystem instead. If you can’t, then try downloading directly to the root of your C: drive, to keep the final pathname as short as possible. If all else fails, boot up Linux and download it with Linux.
And if you aren’t using the official BitTorrent client, it’s possible none of this will apply to you.

haha, i was looking for bittorrent help, but i had to check out this site. ‘homeland stupidity’ thats rich!
so lemme see, homeland security is basically a bunch of toothless hicks with rifles standing at the borders shooting at mexicans and canadians (and birds, lots of birds…mice too…and the majestic moose)?
soo, homeland stupidity would be a group of men in armane suits with great teeth huddled in kansas somewhere all eating icecream?? (i like icecream) :D
is it moose or mooses (mooses…mooses…mooses) heh, thats a funny word; mooses…but no, i’m told its moose (moose…moose…moose) :P

i’m a senior bittorent user, luckily i’m not in the US, so prosecute me all u want u capitalistic pigs. anyway… i found to get the IO error when i use DAEMON tools with another program that makes a game think that it’s an original CD. so the hardisk thinks the emulated drive is real and retracts the double size from the hardisk, so anyway, if any of u have encountered the IO error while having a lot more space on ur hardisk, know that it cud be caused by ur emulation software.

Hi, this one’s on [Errno 28]. I have plenty of room left on my drive (+30GB), FAT32 does support large files, so I was hoping for an idea on how to fix the problem. Cheers.

Dave, FAT32 filesystems do not support files larger than 4GB. If you’re trying to download something that contains a larger file, you must use NTFS.

Hi im havin a 80 GB(slave)hard drive and wants to dl 77GB file but file is too big and the maximum size hard drive can store is around 74 is there anyway i can make that torrent file 2 files or any idea?
Michael Hampton
Feb 23, 2006
Yash, the only thing you can really do in that situation is buy a larger hard drive, or you can have the creator of the torrent split it into two torrents.

Any explanation?

This is odd……….I’m getting the dreaded “file not found” error also partway through a dl as described by CrazyDiamond above….it seems like I can reinitiate the torrent and it will continue dl’ing for a few minutes – probably be able do dl most if not all in this way, but what a pain in the a**!
Using bittorrent, win xp, etc, etc…..probably a long filename problem, but seems funny that it’s intermittent….perhaps the torrent is “filling around” the problem file?? Strange…..

the smallest, and because of that the most efficient and fast bt client is for me utorrent, its about 150kb binary file, saves only a settings file to user directory (yes, windows) and uses about 6megs ram in a typical situation. it has all the features like bitcomet or azureus, but its a lot smaller and straightforward. its of course freeware, like most clients (try to sell a btclient, haha)
i recomend it, especially if you dont have the latest mashine, it does not slow down the system like a huge java-app like azureus does (or so i heard)

SCANDISK ISSUE:
windows has by default a virtual memory with variable size. so if you run scandisk, and you are scanning the drive with the swap-file (the virtual memory) on it -c: by default- then windows might change the size of it while you scan, because windows is evil, and scandisk notices that “the content of drive soandso have changed”. to get around that, change the virtual memory setting to fixed, around double the size of your ram. then you can scandisk all you want, and bittorrent all you want.
good luck
