I live in Texas and I've noticed what I feel to be a disturbing number of these traffic cameras in this area. I'm wondering what capabilities these cameras really have (and what their "real" purpose might be). I've read that in Britain they are hoping to have the capability of monitoring the movements of all vehicles by automatically reading license plates and holding that data in storage for years (see "The Independent" -- December 22, 2005). I've also read that the Britians are putting "chips" in their license plates that can be easily read by these cameras ("Wired" -- August 9,2005). Of course I don't how accurate this information is, but I'm very concerned. Am I over-reacting (please say yes)??
