Bush signs Real ID Act

OMB Watch is reporting that President Bush signed the emergency Iraq appropriations bill, which contained a rider known as the Real ID Act, with new requirements for state driver licenses. Several states are threatening not to comply with the new requirements. The appropriations bill also contained provisions giving the Department of Homeland Security “unprecedented power to waive any and all law, environmental or otherwise, anywhere in the vicinity of the borders, in order to expedite construction of fences and barriers and remove obstacles to the detection of illegal immigration,” according to OMB Watch. It also denies access to courts for anyone aggrieved by such a waiver.
