The real reason people come to the United States: Barbecue

June 21, 2005 @ 4 Comments

Barbecue is easily one of my favorite things to eat. It’s apparently becoming popular in the UK now, as well. This weekend the BBC had a report (MP3) on barbecue in America.

BBC North America business correspondent Stephen Evans recently attended a barbecue festival in New York City, normally thousands of miles away from good barbecue, (it was all imported from the South) and had this to say:

You felt like you were eating history, sharing a land. This was not just food. This was a people and a culture. — Stephen Evans

The report also has a short overview of the history of barbecue in North America. Memphis the home of kosher barbecue? Who would have thought? If you’re from the UK, you have to realize that Memphis is one of the largest barbecue cities in the whole country, and some of the best barbecue available anywhere is right there.

I love barbecue because it is authentic, unpretentious cooking, redolent of place and people. And taste, of course.

That’s why we all love barbecue.

I want your feedback: If you know of good places to find barbecue, anywhere on the planet, please leave a comment and tell us where it is and how was it?
