Hey, who's watching the chicken coop?

As the U.S. throws its resources into Iraq and Afghanistan, not enough attention is being paid to … er … homeland security.

“I am a conservative, so I’m reflexively against the notion of spending more money willy-nilly, but I think it’s telling that the budget of the Department of Homeland Security is almost exactly one tenth of that of the Department of Defense. That proportion needs to be changed,” said Clark Kent Ervin, former inspector general for the Department of Homeland Security.

Ervin and other security experts spoke at a seminar sponsored by the 9/11 Public Discourse Project.

“We’ve got unmanned borders like you wouldn’t believe. There are the cargo containers. Is our critical infrastructure protected? No. Are trains vulnerable? Yes. Across the board we’ve got vulnerabilities. We’ve got plenty of opportunity for the fox to get into the coop,” said David Heyman, director of the Homeland Security Program for the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

And as the U.S. does battle in the Middle East, the Mexicans are doing border security for us. Mexican federal agents arrested two Iraqis trying to sneak across the border into the U.S. on Tuesday, and have completely lost count of the number of people coming from Brazil to sneak into the U.S. after waiving visa requirements for Brazilians.
