License to kill?

People with badges are doing an awful lot of shooting unarmed people lately.

On March 24, an FBI agent in Boston shot an unarmed man he mistakenly identified as a bank robber, claiming both that he tried to run down the agent in his car and that he made a hand movement toward his waist. The victim was unarmed. And to top it all off, not only did the FBI agent in question get away with it, but it’s taken until now for the victim here to be cleared of the bank robbery charges!

And last Wednesday, a park ranger (!) in Nashville shot a man who was driving on the grass in Centennial Park, again claiming he was trying to run over the park ranger. Again, the victim was unarmed, and said he was only trying to leave. This particular park has a serious lack of parking, and driving on the grass is fairly common, especially when the park holds free concerts, movie screenings, etc., which occur frequently in the summer.

Fortunately, both victims survived. Charges are not expected to be filed against either of the shooters.

People in cars without guns may not be “armed” in the “holding a gun” interpretation, but a car is considered a “deadly weapon” by the law.

I’m not saying these shootings were justified… I’m not familiar with them. But in the past, there have been shootings of unarmed drivers that were absolutely justified. The presence or absence of a gun isn’t the only factor to consider.
