Pacific Northwest National Laboratory fires civil rights blogger Joe Huffman

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has fired computer security researcher Joe Huffman for posting “sensitive information” on his blog. What sensitive information? His advocacy of freedom and civil rights.

According to documents on a new site Huffman has set up regarding his wrongful termination, he was apparently fired for advocating Second Amendment rights.

This should be deeply disturbing to everyone. Unfortunately, some people will see Second Amendment and run screaming for Huffman’s head on a platter. That’s not the right response. It’s his First Amendment right to advocate Second Amendment rights we’re talking about here. It’s meant to protect unpopular speech and most especially speech you disagree with. If he loses his First Amendment rights, then you’re next, whatever your viewpoint. Everyone, regardless of their feelings on guns, should be standing with Huffman to defend his First Amendment rights.

And on that Second Amendment, I’m sorry, but it really does protect the individual right to keep and bear arms, and for good reason. Get over it, and then go do something productive, like helping protect and defend those whose rights are being violated, instead of trying to violate them further. Consider joining Gun Owners of America. Even if you don’t own a gun, you’ll be helping to protect the Second Amendment, which is at least as important as the First.
