Brazilian killed in Tube not wearing bulky jacket, didn’t jump ticket barrier

Contrary to initial reports, it has emerged that Jean Charles de Menezes did not “vault the ticket barrier” nor was he wearing a “bulky jacket” last week when undercover police shot and killed him in the London Underground.

He used a travel card. He had no bulky jacket, he was wearing a jeans jacket. But even if he was wearing a bulky jacket that wouldn’t be an excuse to kill him. — Vivien Figueiredo

Figueiredo had just left a meeting with the Metropolitan Police. Speaking at a press conference, she said her cousin’s death, which she called a “crime,” would not go unpunished.

Ah, so he had a travelcard! For those of you who don’t frequently take public transportation, you swipe the card at the ticket barrier and it lets you through. And yes, it can be done pretty fast. That’s the point. Why would someone carrying a travelcard need to jump over the barrier? It would hardly be any faster than just using the card. And London’s Oyster card is faster still.

And he was wearing a denim jacket. This is not at all unusual for London weather, which, if it gets anywhere near warm, likely won’t stay there long. At the time the temperature in London was 21°C (70°F) making a jacket not unreasonable, especially since recent weather has been between 10°-20° and sometimes raining. You would be wearing a jacket, too, and probably taking an umbrella.

As these details continue to emerge, it seems more and more that the 22 July shooting of de Menezes was completely out of line for the circumstances.

De Menezes’ body has arrived in Brazil and will be buried tomorrow.
