President signs for an extra month of Daylight Saving Time

August 8, 2005 @ 5 Comments

President George W. Bush today signed a bill mandating an extra four weeks of daylight saving time.

Beginning in 2007, daylight saving time in the U.S. will begin on the second Sunday in March, and end the first Sunday in November.

The change was part of a larger energy bill signed by the President today in Albuquerque, N.M.

Previously, Congress was considering an extra eight weeks of daylight saving time, which would have begun this fall.

Not everybody is happy about it, of course.

Some parents and school officials worry that in mid-March their children will be waiting for school buses in the early morning darkness. Farmers complain the time change adversely affects livestock, especially dairy cows, disrupting milking schedules. — Associated Press

In addition, all computers will need a software update, and many electronic devices with internal clocks will need to be updated or replaced. Don’t count on getting any free phone calls out of the deal, though. Pretty much everyone should be up to date long before March 2007. We hope.

I don’t think extending the day lights savings time is really going to make a difference. For one reason people aren’t outside as much as they use to be as in the good old days. For as bedtime people go by time when they have to wake up not by when the sun is out. It will make it harder for parents to get their young children to bed for the child will be confused for the sun is still out at bedtime. That was always an issue with my own when school started! I think the fact that it will be dark when the kids have early classes in March is another issue. The kids will need flash lights to catch their bus. Not good! We have enough problems with danger for our kids! I think they should have left it as it was. They have to learn the hard way.
