Believe it or not, you can find interesting stuff on Blog Explosion. Like the following bit of extreme stupidity.
Former Oklahoma City mayor Kirk Humphreys, a Republican, helped Charles Alfred Dreyling, 24, get out of jail last week after he was arrested carrying a pipe bomb into Will Rogers World Airport.
Dreyling told authorities that he had made the device and said it was “basically a pipe bomb,” according to an affidavit. Dreyling said he built the device for entertainment value, never intending to hurt anyone, and forgot that it was in his carryon bag when he brought it to the airport, the affidavit said.
Dreyling said he learned as a teenager how to build homemade explosives from Web sites like “The Anarchist’s Cook Book.” Dreyling said he has built and detonated several explosive devices for recreational purposes, according to the affidavit. — Airport Business
Humphreys testified at Dreyling’s court hearing.
“I know Charlie Dreyling quite well,” Humphreys said. “I’ve known him since he was in the first grade. I appreciate what the authorities are doing making our airlines safe.
“I have every confidence that they’ll find out Charlie Dreyling is a fine young man and no terrorist.
“He had a little explosive device, and boys like to see things go bang. He took it down to an outing at the lake, left it in his bag, forgot it and went to the airport.”
Based in part on Humphreys’ testimony, Dreyling was released to the custody of his mother on $10,000 bail. If convicted, Dreyling faces up to 10 years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine.
I’ll let you make up your own mind. Is this guy a terrorist or just a pyromaniac? And does it matter if his good friend, a prominent local Republican, helped him get out of jail? As for me, I’m staying away from Oklahoma for the foreseeable future.

I would say that he’s probably harmless, but he deserves a little more than a slap on the wrist. Every once in a while someone “forgets” and brings a gun into an airport. Sure, okay, so it was a mistake, but it is still a serious offense. Give him a few weeks in jail, or something. He won’t forget again.

Why does he deserve more than a slap on the wrist? His crime was what again? Why is bringing a gun to the airport a serious crime? That’s f**king retarded. Bringing a gun to the airport and killing people with it is a serious offense. Bringing a pipe bomb to the airport and exploding it would be a major issue.
Forgetting you have one in your carry on bag is just dumb, especially when you live in a nanny state. Welcome to the newer, more retarded society.

@Trevor:
What happens if it just “accidentally went off”?
I do agree he should not be a convicted terrorist (knowing TSA it’s already happening), I don’t agree that he should be free of any reprimand just because nothing happened.
What’s the “agreeable middle”? Hell if I know :P.

Heh,
Well so far as I know a device like he had in his bag is outright illegal no matter whether it’s in your bag behind the sofa, in your closet, or on an airplane. The guy should probably get fined or do community service. Jail-time is ridiculous although I would not be surprised because if enough liberal media focus goes onto this they will be forced to make an example so that bleeding hearts don’t play some kind of a race card or something. It is a shame for this boy because more than likely this blunder is going to cost him very dearly. That being said, it was a stupid thing to do, and anyone that stupid does not get my thumbs up to play with explosives (especially near the public). That’s the kind of guy that doesn’t put the matchheads in a plastic bag so that they don’t ignite when you thread on the pipe cap… Jeeez. If only he’d have blown his hands off in the woods we wouldn’t be reading about this now.

Imagine this guy’s name was not Charles but Mohammed and he had a beard. Instead of $10,000 bail, he would get a one way ticket to a “tropical paradise” (in Dick Cheney’s words) of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

I personally know Charlie. He graduated from my high school and I was his associate member (pledge trainer) in our fraternity. Charlie is a good, God-fearing, honest, humble kid. To those who know him, there is no question this icident was a horrible mistake and NOTHING MORE. I find it highly amusing that the author of this article, and many more in the media, are attempting to politicize this incident because a family friend helped bail him out; of course, they make no mention of, and place no emphasis on, the fact that Mr. Humphries is a FORMER mayor and has been (largely) out of the political scene since losing as a Republican candidate for U.S. Congress. The beauty of America is that we all have the right to speak out, in this case make uninformed judgments, even if we have no basis for our opinion other than some political drivel.

And of course because he and the former mayor said he “forgot”, that’s what must have happened, right?
Reminds me of an old Steve Martin stand-up routine: “Your honor, I FORGOT that armed robbery is against the law!”
I’m all in favor of the principle of “innocent until proven guilty”, but we are seeing a double-standard of presumption emerging in this country lately (in the press and society in general, if not (thank God) the courts), and doing favors like this for the Charles Dreylings of the world only serves to undermine faith in the rule of law and the (color)blindness of justice.
