[...] In a front-page article, two reporters talked about the destitute people fleeing Hurricane Katrina and wondered if America would finally face the problem of poverty. They quoted a foundation president who lamented that Americans “ignore the problems of poverty” until a catastrophe happens. They suggested that only a renewed “War on Poverty” could both help the poor and tell us whether Republicans are ready and able to govern. . . . [...]

[...] The most devastating natural disaster in American history killed over 1,000 people, displaced over 1,000,000 people, and caused damage to thousands of square miles of the American South, much of which has yet to be cleaned up. The government’s response to the disaster, at all levels, merely made things worse. And there’s more yet to come, as this story is ongoing. Read the Hurricane Katrina series. Spans August 28, 2005 to November 3, 2005 in 37 posts. See also the Hurricane Katrina series at Phone Watch. Spans August 27, 2005 to November 10, 2005 in 19 posts. [...]

[...] On Aug. 27, the path of Katrina was still uncertain. Yet, that evening, mayor C. Ray Nagin did indeed order a mandatory evacuation of New Orleans and opened the Superdome and Convention Center for people unable to evacuate. Florida pitched in with supplies, according to a Sept. 1 e-mail that showed just how badly FEMA needed them two days after the storm inflicted widespread damage across several states and led to flooding in New Orleans.
I have had my life uprooted from accidental fires (once an appartment fire caused me to become homeless without any possesions of my own), but I could not imagine my entire neighbourhood, city or even state destroyed and devastated. My heart goes out to people living in Mississippi, New Orleans, southern Alabama, Gulf Coast, etc... I encourage everyone to volunteer for or donate to a hurricane relief fund (the damage is tremendous and many homeless or missing) like UNICEF, American Red Cross (many wounded need blood donations, even volunteer nurses and doctors are needed) or the Salvation Army (find links on http://www.sparesomechange.com for homeless organizations near disaster areas), (make sure it is reputable organization)!

Everyone in the Superdome is expected to be evacuated to the Astrodome in Houston. The situation for those in the city is truly surreal. Rescue workers travel around the city in boats, and little has escaped the floodwaters. The waters have even reached the Superdome, shelter of last resort, and are slowly rising. Floodwaters are expected to rise to three feet above sea level, the same level as Lake Pontchartrain. This would put virtually the entire metropolitan area completely underwater, the worst case scenario that officials had feared. “It’s going to rise to 3 feet above seal level. For example, St. Charles Avenue is 6 feet below sea level, there will most likely be 9 feet of water on St. Charles Avenue,” [New Orleans mayor Ray] Nagin said. [...]
