[...] Overpurchasing and poor storage sounds just like a government-run operation. This is the same government agency that purchased too much ice and sent truckers hauling it all over the country, even as far as Maine, before finally warehousing it. Nobody who needed it got very much ice. [...]

Maybe we should take a look at where this money is going.Remember that ice that got shipped to Maine? Stephen VanDyke points out that it’s going all over the place, at a cost far greater than the actual cost of the ice or the usual transportation costs. Mike Hohnstein, a dispatcher in Omaha, sent a truckload out of Dubuque, Iowa, to Meridian.
Thanks for the update, Dave. It's interesting to watch our bureaucracy struggle to respond to a crisis that calls for real-time action, with its usual paperwork and red tape. The results are occasionally funny but mostly disastrous.

If nothing else, this should point out the absurdly obvious: the U.S. government has gotten too large.

At this point, I;m afraid the food-burning part is a rogue meme. According to the London Times (much more reputable than the Mirror) the food was held up for 5 days, then released. The delay still PO'ed various British officials, but it did not get burned, and the business is long resolved,.
