A new BBC television series reveals that God spoke to President George W. Bush and told him to invade Iraq and Afghanistan.
The three part television series, Elusive Peace: Israel and the Arabs, will air on BBC Two on the 10th, 17th, and 24th October from 21.00 to 22.00. In it, Palestinian Authority leaders describe their first meeting with Bush in June 2003.
Nabil Shaath, Palestinian foreign minister, said, “President Bush said to all of us, ‘I’m driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, “George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan.’ And I did, and then God would tell me, “George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq …’ And I did. And now, again, I feel God’s words coming to me, “Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East.’ And by God I’m gonna do it.'”
Prime minister Abu Nazen said he was at the same meeting, and that Bush said to him, “I have a moral and religious obligation. So I will get you a Palestinian state.”
White House press secretary Scott McClellan denied the accuracy of the statements, calling them absurd. “He’s never made such comments,” McClellan said.
The sequel to Norma Percy’s The 50 Years War (1998) follows the fraught history of the Arab-Israeli peace process from 1999-2005.
The film includes interviews with insiders from Ariel Sharon and Yasser Arafat to Bill Clinton and Colin Powell, behind-the-scenes footage of tense peace negotiations, and snapshots of the violence that has enveloped the region in recent years.
Programme One examines how Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak tries to negotiate peace with Syria and then — at Camp David, under President Clinton’s eye — with Yasser Arafat.
Programme Two investigates Ariel Sharon’s response to a Passover suicide bombing, launching Operation Defensive Shield against the Palestinians and bombs Arafat’s compound to rubble. And how subsequently President Bush and Prime Minister Blair intervene to save him.
The final programme will tell the inside story of the birth — and death — of President Bush’s Road Map to peace. And how Sharon managed to persuade President Bush to abandon the Palestinians and back his ‘unilateral withdrawal’ from Gaza. But Arafat’s death changed everything. — Ten Alps Plc
The contents of Part 1 according to the BBC:
The story of how Israel’s Prime Minister Ehud Barak persuaded President Clinton to devote his last 18 months in office to helping make peace with Yasser Arafat. But Barak got cold feet twice. Then Ariel Sharon took a walk around Jerusalem’s holiest mosques, and peace making was over.
In the first programme in a major three-part documentary series, the world leaders, generals, ministers and advisers involved in the peace process reveal what happened behind closed doors, as the peace process failed and the violence of the intifada exploded. Includes contributions from Bill Clinton, Ehud Barak, Yasser Arafat, Madeleine Albright and Bouthaina Shaaban.
Oh, I can’t wait to see this. And of course they leave the good stuff to the last part.
