In 2006 my husband and I payed $51494 in state, employment, and fed. taxes plus we had to pay $34,000 in federal estimated taxes for 2007. (First year in consulting business)This isn't even property tax and all those other lovelies. We have 4 kids. Tell me how we are supposed to afford retirement, health insurance and college? We are certainly far from wealthy. I guess buy a farm and move to Wyoming would save a bundle huh? Oh yeah give all our money to the IRS and borrow from the banks for the rest of our life and never own anything. The AMT tax is keeping middle America pretty messed up and they need to adjust it for inflation...pure robbery at its finest! We can't deduct anything...not our exemptions nothing...just a flat tax...its almost worth going back to being an employee and let them deal with the stress. The IRS is something you never want to owe for long.We never thought we would still be buying raman noodles on sale...

[...] Here’s a newsflash. Government is not your shepherd. They are wolves in shepherds’ clothing. They pretend to protect us, while they are actually preying on us, devouring us from within, eating out our substance, and blaming anyone but themselves for the destruction they leave in their wake.
I'm paying near $500 in taxes this year. I've never gotten into three digits, neither on a refund, nor a payment due...

All this money taken in taxes, and Social Security is still a concern.
What a crock :P.

The concept of "withholding" has numbed so many people. It's taken before they ever see it. They don't even regard it as being taken from them. Likewise with corporate taxes, they think "oh, well it's just some greedy corporation being taxed," not seeing that those taxes get passed on to the individual investors, employees, customers, etc. The other thing killing us is our hyper-progressive taxation, whereby successful people pay a much higher percentage so that politicians can give their money to the poor, and buy enough votes to stay in office. It's gotten to the point where many government programs and offices exist only to perpetuate themselves.
