Bits of homeland stupidity

This week’s full of stupid people and stupid government regulations. Enjoy!

  • The head of the Tampa office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement was arrested Oct. 24 after exposing himself to a 16 year old girl in an Orlando shopping mall. ICE suspended Frank Figueroa Thursday, Oct. 26, after learning of his arrest. Figueroa had “promised to vigorously pursue such sex crimes” as the prostitution ring his office took down last week.
  • Contra Costa County, Calif., is set to prohibit convicted felons from owning dogs which are “aggressive” or weigh over 20 pounds, and require anyone owning a “potentially dangerous” dog to get a special permit. The definition of “potentially dangerous” was not available, but was reported to be “lowered.” (Via Schneier on Security)
  • Truckers are upset over Patriot Act regulations requiring them to be fingerprinted and undergo background checks to receive hazmat endorsements, saying the regulatioins are too broad and do nothing to prevent terrorism. The regulations even apply to truckers hauling paint and soft drink syrup, and may cause some trucking companies to stop hauling hazmat entirely.
  • In Downe Township, N.J., a school bus regularly stops at McDonald’s on Friday mornings on the way to school, so the high school students can grab breakfast. Mother Linda Tyler doesn’t like it, not for any good reason, but because she’s an idiot. “Tyler wants the stops to, well, stop before a student is hit by someone speeding into the drive-thru or before a robbery occurs and her son and other students are inside.” (Via Schneier on Security, again)

Is it me, or does the idea of a law enforcement official getting busted for participating in the illegal activity his office promised to stop remind you of the scene from the movie Night Patrol where Billy Barty, playing the chief of police, promised to drive prostitution out of his town … and then later in the evening you saw him driving his Caddy out of town loaded full of hookers? Maybe it’s just me.
