You might remember the lady who was thrown off a Southwest Airlines flight for wearing a certain T-shirt. Well, it’s happened again. Destiny Corkle was thrown out of the Social Security Administration office in Joplin, Mo., for wearing the now-infamous “Meet the Fuckers” T-shirt.
The T-shirt bears the message, “Meet the Fuckers,” surrounded by photographs of President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff and former FEMA head Michael Brown. It is a parody of a 2004 movie, “Meet the Fockers.”
When she walked into the building to obtain a replacement Social Security card, the security guard approached her and asked her to leave, Corkle said.
“He told me that wasn’t the appropriate way to talk about the president,” Corkle said. . . .
In a phone conversation Monday, Corkle said [security guard James] Talley and other office officials discriminated against her not because of the language on the shirt, but because of its political message.
Officials wouldn’t comment about the incident in detail, but they said in a statement released last week that it is the office’s policy to provide everyone the best possible service.
“A visitor to our office wore a T-shirt bearing a message generally considered to be offensive to the community we serve,” the statement said. “We offered this individual expedited service and were able to quickly transact her business without disrupting others.”
Even if the shirt was offensive, it is not the kind of speech that government can limit, such as a clear and present danger or fighting words, said First Amendment Center attorney David Hudson. . . .
It is unclear what kind of service Corkle actually received. After the incident, she said that she had been denied service. Then, in a phone interview this week, she said she was forced to stand outside the building before she could fill out her paperwork.
Karen Brown, the Social Security Administration’s district manager, said Corkle’s claims that she was served outside the building were untrue.
“It’s not like she was out in the lawn or anything,” Brown said. She would not comment further on the incident. — Joplin Globe
Now many people commented on the Southwest Airlines story that since it is a private company and not the government, they were well within their rights to deny service to the woman in that story.
This is different; it’s a federal government office.

Glad you made the distinction between private/government. Most morons in this country would yell “FREEDOM OF SPEECH” about the Southwest Airlines incident. It’s not a trivial distinction, but a lot of people miss it.

But are we so threatened by unpopular opinions that we must take physical action against it? I don’t disagree that in either case they had a RIGHT to do it, but just because one has the right or the power to do something doesn’t mean that it is wise to do so.

it’s ok..actually it’s not her fault at all….stupidity is everyone’s fault..maybe if she took education more seriously(i am referring to her completely misspelled blog and constant misuse of the english language)she may have been able to read what her t-shirt said and realized she offended not only the president but the entire country and those who serve and have served to defend her unappreciated and undeserving right to stand in the very office she recieves her money and benefits “stolen” from tax payers everyday..so she can stroll in to the s.s. office any time of day with her kid hanging off her hip and proudly wear that disgusting and disgraceful shirt and know that i nor anyone in my family would ever stoop to her level or fight for her in any manor..on a battle field or for her rights!!!!!get a life..get some education(sadly, that would be free for you too)and get a job!!!

So wearing a sarcastic T-Shirt is evil and has to be removed from public, while bombing other countries without good reason and killing thousends of people for mastery and money is OK ???
I’m glad NOT to live in such Police-State!
People; Start to read proper books, start to use your brains. Or change the slogan on your currency to “in rifles we trust, in chaos we believeâ€
