President Bush pardoned two turkeys on Tuesday, and it’s clear that there are a few more who will be asking for pardons soon.
- The “single most serious national security threat” to the U.S. is the electromagnetic pulse (EMP), according to turkey Frank J. Gaffney Jr. of the Center for Security Policy. Bruce Schneier, who I’d trust long before this turkey, calls it a “movie-plot threat.” And I recall a TV series based on this imagined threat.
- Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii) introduced a bill to require department heads in Homeland Security to actually have experience. Republican turkeys are expected to vote No on the bill, even though a primary reason for low morale in the Department of Homeland Security is the fact that leadership frequently has little or no relevant experience.
- Turkeys Dick Cheney and CIA director Porter Goss have been trying to get Congress to exempt the CIA from a new law that would prohibit the U.S. from using torture. I have to wonder why, since CIA veterans with experience in the matter say not only that torture doesn’t work, it’s morally wrong.
