Bits of homeland stupidity in the air

December 2, 2005 @ No Comments

In yet another special edition of “Bits,” all of today’s stupid news headlines are way up in the air. Today we have stupidity from the FAA, ICE, and parties unknown.

  • President Bush said this week that the Border Patrol would use unmanned drones to patrol the U.S.-Mexico border. However, so far only one drone is in operation, because the Federal Aviation Administration won’t let them fly.
  • A new Government Accountability Office report (PDF) shows that the Federal Air Marshal Service isn’t getting enough new people trained. The program had been put under Immigration and Customs Enforcement, where it languished as bureaucrats saw a move into FAMS as not career-enhancing.
  • America West flight 820 from Phoenix to Boston was diverted to Kansas City on Thursday because of “threatening graffiti” found in the lavatory. The graffiti read, “Taliban is Here.” And Friday morning, the same graffiti was found on Continental flight 2499 before it was able to leave Newark. Officials have no idea who is writing the graffiti but believe Friday’s incident is a copycat crime.
