South Carolina throws away minibottles

January 2, 2006 @ 5 Comments

As of Sunday, bars and restaurants in South Carolina are no longer required to serve liquor from minibottles, and can now pour drinks from the customary larger bottles everyone else uses.

Of course, the stupid state still has a law prohibiting alcohol sales on Sunday throughout most of the state, excluding Columbia and the beach areas.

For 22 years, South Carolina law required bartenders to use the tiny 1.7-ounce bottles most often associated with airplanes and hotel minibars.

Then, last year, South Carolinians voted the minibottles out, and lawmakers followed through earlier this year by approving regulations to give bars and restaurants the choice to pour from the big bottles starting Jan. 1.

With the law change, the state’s method for taxing liquor sales changed, too. South Carolina collected 25 cents for every minibottle sold; now, it will charge 5 percent on every drink.

“I thought it was going to be us — South Carolina — and the airplanes forever,” said Matthew Andrade, celebrating with a Red Bull and vodka poured from a liter bottle at Rookie’s Sports Bar & Grill in Columbia. The staff was free pouring while guests were still kissing, hugging and toasting over champagne early Sunday. — Associated Press

It’s definitely an improvement, though the state has a long way to go. Getting rid of that ridiculous blue law would be even better. The state has no place telling people what days of the week they can and cannot drink.

Well, so it goes again…another southern state finally coming out of the 1930′s to discover a different world. Cheers to y’all! (and to think… all of the bubbas and bubbetts that wonder why southerners are thought to be stupid… as long as y’all let the bossman whip ya, it’s gonna happen!) Get ‘r done and start voting these bastards out of office and get some folks in office that will do the work that drings these states into the 21st century. YA GOTTA VOTE! yes it DOES count! Give the boot to the asses that aren’t doin their jobs. BTW, party lines don’t mean much, there are dumbshits in both parties, you have to figure out which ones are the best for the job and toss the party bias out the window. That is the only way fot the South to Rise Again! lol

I lived in SC years ago, and actually minibottles had 2 advantages IMHO. 1) They were covenient, premeasured portions, and 2)they actually caused drinks to be made stronger – minibottles have 1.7 oz of alcohol vs the 1.2 – 1.5 oz in normally poured portions. Ah, the law of unintended consequences strikes again….. 8)

Booze, the stuff real news is made of! OK, who’s gonna profit? Sometimes it’s the strangest people. I mean, whudda thunk that Ron and Nancy had their first child after only seven months of wedded bliss, and Pat and Missus Robertson were only two months away from the birth of their first child when they took religous matrimonial vows?
