James Moore, a former television news correspondent who has written a book critical of the Bush administration, said Wednesday that he was listed on a terrorist watchlist maintained by the Department of Homeland Security.
Moore said that a year ago, while researching information for an upcoming book, he attempted to take a flight to Ohio and was denied boarding. He said he called an 800 number to reach the Transportation Security Administration, but was rebuffed.
Moore has already published one book, Bush’s Brain: How Karl Rove Made George W. Bush Presidential, which examines the role Rove plays in the Bush administration, and is currently working on a second book.
Moore is able to fly now, he said, but must undergo additional security screening before boarding a flight, and cannot use the Internet or airport kiosks to print boarding passes.
TSA maintaints two watchlists: a no-fly list, in which people appearing on the list will be denied boarding under any circumstances, and a selectee list, in which people on the list will undergo additional security screening before being allowed to board a flight. People whose names closely match one on the list can register with TSA to help prevent misidentification, but the procedure won’t guarantee that they will be able to board or won’t have to undergo additional screening.
Moore is among an estimated 30,000 Americans mistakenly matched to federal watchlists. The mistakes have prevented many innocent Americans from flying, such as infants with names similar to one on the no-fly list.
“I suppose I should think of it as a minor sacrifice to help keep my country safe,” Moore wrote. “I’m just doing my patriotic duty.”
TSA refuses to confirm or deny the presence of any particular person on the watchlists.

It might just be the common name. That’s the story they gave me when they told me I was on a list, when I was trying to take a flight with my wife and two children a couple years ago.
Or else, maybe it’s YOUR fault, James Moore, that I, James Moore have to undergo additional screening to fly! LOL
