FEMA is still a joke

Alert reader Tony sent me a snapshot from the inside front cover of Consumer Reports magazine showing part of a letter from FEMA to various homeowners in flood-prone areas offering flood insurance.

The letter, a solicitation for the National Flood Insurance Program, says that “Flooding is not covered by your homeowners insurance policy. And… the federal government is unlikely to provide help in most cases of flooding.”

It bore the signature of former FEMA head Michael Brown, and was reportedly sent out this summer, before Hurricane Katrina formed.

Enjoy!

this is nothing new. this has been the rule for many years.
    1. homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding. the contract says so.
    2. the govt sponsors flood insurance for those that want to buy it.
    3. the govt pays for tv and print ads making people aware of this.
    4. it is up to individuals to purchase flood insurance or not.
    5. if you are living below sea level and you don’t buy it, you are gambling with your house. same as if you got a 2nd mortgage and then went to vegas.

I can’t seem to get a responce from FEMA on the following.
Back in ‘93 they said they don’t cover damage from waves but was wondering if they had changed anything.

I live on Lake Ontario in NY and I am required to obtain flood insurance due to a mortgage on the house.

Since Lake Ontario has never overflowed since creation (I think), and the ONLY thing that will destroy my property is waves riding on top of high water levels in the spring why am I required to feed FEMA when they won’t cover wave damage?
