How do people return thaat money without fear of being charged with fraud. There is nothing on the Fema site to help people who are willing to come forward and return unused money. I received a automatic bank deposit which I think was too much. I'm terrified of coming forward. I won't spend it but I'm afraid of trying to return it. I never gave FEMA any false information, but with the way they loose stuff how do I know they have all of my correct information. I never received a paper copy of what I reported to them to verify it was accurate. I don't know what to do.

Many people talk about fraud. It was a followup to a February 13 story on the Government Accountability Office’s report on people defrauding FEMA. And despite their having access to the same sources I do — and a whole lot more — it’s taken the mainstream media until today to get a story out. Now FEMA is lowering the boom. It’s sending letters to everyone who got too much money, telling them they now have to pay back the amount of assistance they were overpaid. “During a disaster, FEMA’s highest priority is helping the people who need it most as quickly as possible,” said acting FEMA director David “Duct Tape” Paulison. “Even as funds are quickly distributed to meet the needs of disaster victims, FEMA takes very seriously our responsibilities to taxpayer dollars, and is careful to make sure funds are distributed appropriately.” [...]

[...] Last month I let you know that the Federal Emergency Management Agency gave out far too much money in disaster assistance for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, mainly because of people defrauding the system.
