This week’s roundup of stupid news headlines comes from the Department of Recto-Cranial Inversion.
- Campus police spotted a sticker from punk rock band This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb attached to the bicycle of Patrick Hanlin, 28, and called in the bomb squad. While the owner of the bicycle was initially released, he is now facing charges of inducing panic.
- When Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff went to border town Brownsville, Texas, to announce a new border security agreement with Mexico, homeland security officials prevented the mayor and city officials from attending, even though they had been invited.
- Speaking of the Department of Homeland Security, it appears that the department’s headquarters is guarded by private security firm Wackenhut, whose guards report that they haven’t received sufficient training to respond to terrorist attacks. “It would be ironic, to say the least, if DHS were unable to secure its own headquarters,” wrote Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.).

When our government is bent on contracting everything out, I do not see how they can assure anyone any semblence of security. Look what happened back in 2004 when the Army contracted food service for our military in Bagdad, only to have a suicide bomber to be hired on to injure and kill a number of troops in the chow tent. The issues regarding Homeland Security and Michael Chertoff can only be described as playing off peoples fears and suspicions, reactive, and using freight trains to kill flies,(that is taking away our civil liberties and treating everyone as a criminal to find one or two terrorist), rather than encouraging logical ways of preventing terrorism from happening in the first place.
