Hundreds of people disappeared by secret court proceedings

March 13, 2006 @ 2 Comments

In case you haven’t heard, March 12-18 is Sunshine Week. During Sunshine Week, everyone throws a spotlight on government secrecy and shows how it is a bad thing for good government.

A couple of things to come out of Sunshine Week so far: 62% of Americans believe that “public access to government records is critical to the functioning of good government.” Do we have public access to government records?

Hundreds of court cases are being held in complete secrecy. Even after these cases end, nobody knows who the defendants were or what happened. The cases aren’t even listed on court dockets.

Secret court proceedings in America? You heard right. Did they get a fair trial? Nobody knows. Nobody can find out. Hundreds of people, perhaps even more, have been disappeared using this process, and nobody even knows why.

Does that sound like good government to you?
