[...] Yesterday, after reporting on a U.S. Department of Agriculture security breach compromising the personal information of 26,000 people, I said that I really should just write up a template for this, so the next time a government agency gets hacked, I can just drop in the name of the agency, the name of the head honcho, and post it. After all, government computer security sucks. I said I could start a Hacked Government Agency of the Month Club and never lack for an incident, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that I could do a Security Breach of the Day and never lack for material.
[...] The House Government Reform Committee, chaired by Rep. Thomas M. Davis III (R-Va.), began releasing its annual federal computer security report card (PDF) five years ago, which each year awarded the VA a failing grade, the only exception being 2003 when the VA got to choose its own C grade. The report card measures compliance with the 2002 Federal Information Security Management Act, which requires agencies to test their systems, develop cyber-security plans and report on their progress.
[...] As previously reported, computer security at the Department of Homeland Security sucks. I mean really sucks. (It sucks government-wide, but it’s particularly ironic that it sucks at DHS.) And there’s no end in sight to the sheer stupidity of how DHS’s IT infrastructure is being mismanaged.
[...] Meanwhile, back inside the Beltway, government computer security sucks, as I’ve reported on repeatedly, and some experts think that a federal law designed to enhance government computer security, the Federal Information Security Management Act of 2002, is actually getting in the way.
