My husband and I have a friend who is being detained at ICE Service Processing Center, El Paso TX. He was stopped10-29-07 at a state border crossing on his way home to Florida from Arizona. They said he did not have all of his paper work. He has been legally here and trying to get his green card since 2000. We have a business and have often submitted paperwork on his behalf through his lawyer and the labor dept. ie I-140. Everything to my knowledge has been approved. I don't understand why they are holding him and we are affraid he might be deported. We are looking for any way to help him.

Oh my god, tell me about it. They are horrible! My greencard expired (I was away at college..) and went to get a new one and make a biometrics appt. 3 years ago, and never got an appt even after numerous calls for 2 years..I travelled anyway but as always held up at customs...No one could ever give me an answer as to why my application was STILL "processing." It was in a word unbelievable! I finally got a letter a few weeks ago & will get my greencard by July of this year-3 YEARS later! =(

PS-I'm writing a research paper on this crap so if anyone has any info. I'd greatly appreciate it!

[...] What need to be “fixed” are the real problems underlying illegal immigration, as well as everyone’s illegal immigration complaints. First, that it’s far too difficult for people to immigrate legally. For nationals of some countries, it’s virtually impossible. This is so because of a Byzantine bureaucracy which can’t even keep up with even the minuscule quotas imposed on immigration from various other countries. For others, it’s an insulting and degrading “lottery.” [...]

So what can we do if they lost our paperwork ? I got 3 year bar from entering US because they lost my paperwork. We (through lawyer) have submitted them twice, and yet they said they have never received them. I was found overstayed because of this, and not eligible to be adjusted with hubby's GC.

"We’re all paying for immigrants who attempt to play by the rules"

USCIS is a fee-funded agency. Legal immigrants have been paying for
these incompetenet Government services through theur noses. Thank God
there is a web site to expose these misdeeds.

You need to cover the fiasco of Backlog Elimination Centers also.
USCIS and its private contractors are in unholy nexus. They simply do
not care about their end-customers, the legal immigrants.

[...] That report, published last May, found that USCIS “has not yet developed a plan governing how it will manage this program and the contractors working on it, and it has not yet developed a plan for measuring and evaluating the results of a pilot test of a document scanning and storage capability.” In other words, they’re flying blind.
[...] The National Guard isn’t going to help much. And while building a fence certainly would slow down illegal immigration, it’s a very unwise idea for other reasons. The first thing that needs to happen to get a handle on illegal immigration is to make legal immigration easier. It’s almost impossible to legally immigrate into the U.S., and for those who attempt to go through the system, a monstrous, inefficient, unforgiving bureaucracy awaits. It’s no wonder millions of people bypassed the bureaucracy; it’s far too large and cumbersome. Filed under: Politics, Homeland Security, Terrorism, Law Enforcement, Military, Immigration [...]
