[...] Next up are a trio of articles about last week’s revelation about the NSA’s telephone call data mining. First, Homeland Stupidity examines the reaction, or lack thereof, of the American public to this latest invasion of privacy. Then, Punny Money argues that we now all have the right to sue the telephone company. Finally, though it was written before the NSA story came out, Michael at Homeland Stupidity writes about the relationship between privacy and individual liberty. [...]

I agree with you completely. I'm 26 years old and I read 1984 and Brave New World back to back about 3 or 4 years ago. It just amazed me how similar to our world today that both of these books written so long ago were. Some days I want to just swallow the blue pill and be put back in the Matrix, but now that I know what I know it's impossible to turn my back on the facts and go about my life as if Big Brother isn't watching. Years ago I've even gone as far as to say that I am confident that they have the storage capacity and the means to record and archive every cellphone conversation that has ever been had. Though these conversations would not be legal or constitutional evidence in court (until they piss on the constitution again and make it legal anyhow) they would be very good tools to look up and listen to any conversation had between any "suspect" and whoever they talk to and whoever they talk to and so on and so on.

Of course I was always met with some comment about how I'm crazy or some stupid joke about Big Brother watching me followed by giggles. Needless to say, I'm not the most fun guy to bring to a party anymore.

I'm convinced that if we're hearing about the databases, than that's just the least of what they're actually doing already. I believe that within the next few years we will come to know much more about what unconstitutional activities are going on behind closed doors all in the name of Security. And the illegal wiretapping will seem like childs play when we get wind of it. The only reason that we all know about the phone crap now is because they know that it's too late for any one of us to do a damn thing about it. We can't stop using the phones for the very same reasons that we can't stop using gas, no matter how high the price.

I like your "country jumping the shark" reference. If Ben Franklin had Happy Days to watch back in his day he may have used that instead of what I believe is the greatest quote by any American man in history. One which, sadly it seems, has been all but forgotten... and most likely, not even tought in schools anymore.

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither safety nor liberty.

I suppose that quote could very well be followed up by two other great quotes by the $100.00 man himself:

This will be the best security for maintaining our liberties. A nation of well-informed men who have been taught to know and prize the rights which God has given them cannot be enslaved. It is in the religion of ignorance that tyranny begins.

&

Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become more corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters.

Read that quote and look around you.... I think we all may have jumped that shark not too long after the Fonz did......

Next stops... Sodom and Gomorra. Thanks for keeping the seat warm for the Anti Christ George W.
