As an employer with five business ongoing, I think it is necessary to mandate social security verifications, but I do believe we should first take away all free benefits for illegal immigrants, then verify those collecting benefits under false social security numbers, medical, welfare, food stamps, there are circles of Illegal immigrants that live strictly on these programs. They don't ever work. Let's start there....

[...] Speaking of requirements, the so-called Strive Act is gaining traction. It would require employers to submit all the personal information of all their new hires to the Department of Homeland Security for verification. Anyone whose verification fails would have to be fired if they were unable to correct their records. DHS is currently testing the verification system, known as Basic Pilot, and has lobbied Congress to fund and mandate it. [...]

[...] It’s pretty clear that some sort of fundamental change is necessary. There’s no way to locate and deport every “illegal” who came here to work. The government simply doesn’t have the resources, and it would destroy our economy to even make the attempt. But some well-meaning but misguided legislators not only want to make the attempt, they want to require everyone in the country to be screened by the government before they can accept a job. The document-verification program, known as Basic Pilot, allows the roughly 13,000 participating employers to confirm that a worker’s name matches up properly with the Social Security number the worker provides. But the system is not equipped to catch a worker who uses a borrowed or stolen identity — or multiple uses of that identity. [...]

govt's mistake, govt's cleanup. If there's a discrepancy, and the govt is forcing me to do it, they can damn well contact me.

also, why not keep it voluntary, but just enforce penalties for hiring illegals more stiffly? Seems like that would have teh same effect with less bureaucracy.
