I suggest talking to the fine volunteers in these after school programs which are either large national organizations like the Big Brothers Big Sisters, YMCA, Boys and Girls Clubs or small community centers ran out of the back of local churches. These programs are non-profit and/or faith based sites, not government centers. Your article is right, it is a shame not all of our city's children have privileged homes to safety spend all of their time in the upper class part of town. Besides some of the bare essentials that these clubs provide like an alternative to spending time on the streets, food, clothes and school supplies, these clubs are providing the kids with an adult advocate that cares about them and their success in school. In Louisville, Kidtrax does not contain information about doctors, insurance or food stamps, unless the site types it into a custom field, just the same as any notes we want to keep ourselves. Information like that is not fed from the government. The partnership with the school system provides information such as which Reading standards the children are failing on classroom quizzes so remediation work and homework help at the after school site can be more effective. Some of these kids don't have a safe home, much less homework help at home. These non-profit sites and their volunteers provide an invaluable service to the city's urban, under-privileged children.

[...] Perhaps nFocus, the creators of KidTrax, will be of service in the implementation of this plan. Then we can have a streamlined system of collecting student information from the time a child enters daycare until they enter the workforce and beyond. How else can we hold universities accountable? Filed under: Politics, Privacy, Education [...]
