Help Homeland Security find potential threats to the nation

October 5, 2006 @ Michael Hampton4 Comments

The Department of Homeland Security is having all kinds of trouble with its various data mining, natural language and other programs to vacuum in the entire content of the Internet and find potential threats to the nation.

So I thought I could lend them a hand.

One program, ADVISE, is now under Congressional scrutiny because it doesn’t seem to have any privacy protections, or for that matter any clear guidelines at all, and runs the risk of being a colossal waste of money. Another program, recently announced, will eventually be able to read text looking for negative opinions of U.S. policies, which officials say could indicate potential threats to the nation.

Negative opinions of U.S. policy indicate potential threats to the nation? Obviously, I’m now a potential threat to the nation, because I think most of what the government does is so much crap. And that brings me to the point.

It’s going to be years before these data mining and natural language programs are in place and running at full capacity. In the meantime, those of us with negative opinions of U.S. policies can help by advertising on our web sites our status as a potential threat to the nation. I’ve provided a few sample banners which you can use for this purpose below, along with code for inserting them into your web site. You should be able to find one to fit any available space.

The risk of being a colossal waste of money is probably not even on the Congressional radar. If it was, all of DHS would be in jeopardy.

Wow! I can’t believe that it’s been almost 3 months since I’ve lasted posted a comment on this site, and I’m sure you’re wondering why it wasn’t longer than that as you read this! :)

This is a subject that I’m very passionate about, which is why I couldn’t stop myself from adding in my own $0.02! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again (even though I already know this is just going to be a waste of my time!): The rules of Business Management DO NOT APPLY to Information Technology! PERIOD! So, the next time you hear about one of these software-related diasters like this one, you’ll know why it happened in the first place!

Now then… I know that I need to elaborate on that statement further, so I won’t dissapoint anyone (or myself, most likely!)…

When the “rules of Business Management” were first written, there was no such thing as “computers”; If your Pen or Pencil “crashed” at 3pm on a Friday, then all you had to do was sharpen it or get a new one. But, if your computer crashed at 3pm on a Friday, then everyone LEAVES early! Even though you could still use the old standby’s known as Pen & Paper, nobody does! In this day and age, computers will MAKE OR BREAK a business, no matter what you might think, believe, have been told, have been taught or have prayed to be true! If you think I’m wrong, then you’re either going to be or are already just another statistic in the “Failed Businesses” category.

So then, if you already know that’s true or at least you’re curiousity has been peaked, then asked yourself this question:

If I already know that technology is key to the survival of my business, I really don’t know anything about technology other than the how to turn on my computer and use the programs I need to know how to use to run my business and my Computer Guy is really good with computers because he’s fixed my PC at home (you can use your own description instead)… Wait a second… That would mean…. NO FUCKIN’ WAY!!!

“THAT’S the guy I’ve entrusted the survival of my business to?!?! The same guy who fixed my ‘missing desktop icon’ is also responsble for all of my data!?!? Is he actually qualified for that kind of responsibility?!?!”

Sorry for the long-winding comment, but I DID say I was a Computer Nerd! If nothing else, you should consider yourself lucky that I stopped at the Business Management side of the issue; the IT side is even longer!

Point is this… IT is NOT a toy or something that should be taken for granted in the business world; It’s now the necessity to survival, not the luxury it used to be!
