Susette Kelo fought the eminent domain taking of her house for a private redevelopment all the way to the Supreme Court and lost.
Yet she’s still managed to get in the last word.
Kelo sent a rather unusual holiday card to 30 or so people involved in the taking of the entire Fort Trumbull neighborhood in New London, Conn., to build an office complex.
The card featured a picture of her home on the front, and inside, the following warm greeting:
Here is my house that you did take
From me to you, this spell I make
Your houses, your homes
Your family, your friends
May they live in misery
That never ends.
I curse you all
May you rot in hell
To each of you
I send this spell
For the rest of your lives
I wish you ill
I send this now
By the power of will
And her holiday mailing list might not be done, either. She’s reportedly considering sending a card to each of the five Supreme Court justices who chose to expand eminent domain through their flawed decision.
“It’s amazing anyone could be so vindictive when they’ve made so much money,” said [Fort Trumbull supporter Gail] Schwenker-Mayer on Tuesday, after receiving her card.
[New London Development Corporation member George] Milne, a former top executive at Pfizer Inc. here, called the card “immensely childish.”
“It’s sort of sad she elected to do this,” said Milne. “We were trying to do things for the city. It was nothing personal.”
[NLDC member Reid] Burdick said he put the card on his mantel with all his other Christmas greetings. “I think the poor woman has gone around the bend,” he said. “I haven’t gotten any mail from her in years. I still feel bad for Susette. The sorry part of this is that the things she’s angry about were not done to be mean-spirited toward her personally.” — The New London Day
Oh no, nothing personal. You just happened to be living where we wanted to build an office building and make lots of money, so we got our government buddies to force you out. At gunpoint, if necessary.
Which is exactly what happened to Lauren Canario. She was arrested in September for criminal trespass when she refused to leave one of the properties being demolished, and continues to languish in jail. She is being held indefinitely and after three months still has not been given a trial date. Supporters plan a protest Saturday at noon in front of the York Correctional Institution in Niantic where she is being held.
May you all rot in hell, and may your new economic development fall right into the Thames River.
And remember, when they come for your house, it’s nothing personal. It’s just 21st century fascism.
Update: Lauren Canario was released from prison today. Details are sketchy right now, but apparently some sort of court appearance took place. Her husband is traveling to Connecticut now to pick her up, and I hope to have more details later this afternoon.

Umm… “so much money” ??? Didn’t they end up paying her the amount that her home was worth at the time they first claimed eminent domain — not the significantly higher amount it was worth at the time she finally gave it up?

Eminent domain scares me… I don’t like what they’re doing with it. I think we need to learn more about it and find ways to control it…

Today, on the Bill O’Reilly radio show, I heard about this for the first time. What a crock! I think we’re nearing the time when we need to throw the tea in the harbor again.

May the man who murdered John Lennon “Rot in hell” He took a major power in the war for peace and just a beautiful person. For someone to keep composer through all the John did, to fight through the evil that he was introduced to. Battled with the truth and how much of it we never see or is hidden from us. He tried to tell it like it is and was shot for his great beliefs… The parole board when Chapman came up for parole said “Even if Jesus himself came down and recommended freedom, you would not be freed”
