As I looked at the Secret Service guys standing around the front door, I noticed that they all had automatic weapons, kevlar hemets and vests and were wearing combat fatigues. I couldn't help but wonder how many of us loccals they would be willing to take out to eliminate a sniper or other threat. These days we need to fear the police at least as much as the criminals - sometimes a <i>lot more.</i> Has this vast increase in police firepower served society? Are we safer as a result?

Not just “no”, but hell no! Between the insane “drug war” and the so-called “war on terror”, this rapid increasing militarization of the local police forces puts us all at a much greater risk. These days we need to fear the police at least as much as the criminals – sometimes a lot more.
