St. Elizabeths Hospital has for about the past 20 years been divided into a federal section, controlled by the federal government, and a District of Columbia section, owned and managed by the D.C. government. While the District of Columbia portion of the Hospital still houses and treats patients, the side owned by the feds has not been an active hospital since the split happened. Two things, though, are particularly bad about this decision: 1. A portion of the District of Columbia that could used for economic development and revitalization, located in one of the poorest areas of the District, is going to be gated off and insular, so as to minimize the possibility for economic growth; and 2. This will prevent the public from having access to one of the best views in the District of Columbia. See this article - - for more information.
