With regard to the VA Tech shootings. I know the owner of the gunshop where the shooter bought one of his weaponds. The shooter in fact did not have a history of mental illness. At least not one that came up in the background check. While many teachers at his school were concerned about his state of mind no offical action was ever taken and there was nothing on his record. Virginia has a very strict background check. If there are any indications of mental illness, domistic violance or past crimes you don't get to buy a gun in Virginia.

First of all, we in the U.S.A have the right to have guns for protection, hunting, sport shooting, and any other legal reason. It is a fact and that's that. Also, if you really think that making it harder for people who have this right and who follow the law to buy guns will stop someone who is set on harming people, then you are just trying to believe a lie. People can be killed by other people in many other ways than by the use of guns. A few home made bombs in the place of a gun would be just as deadly and very easy to make. A good guy with a gun who is nearest the bad guy when he starts shooting or bombing could, and has been known to, stop a killer. An old lady (or whoever for that matter) who is attacked suddenly has the right to use gun to even up the odds. Oh, and I have seen many people get pepper sprayed and still have lots of fight in them. And as far as any of the single shot kinds of less than leathal devices go, you had better hope you can stop your foe with one shot in a very stressfull situation, and hope he does not have friends along with him. Most people who carry a gun legally, have put much thought into it, and they are safty minded. They are the kind of people who take the time to learn how to carry the gun safely, and who want to save life, not take it. It seems like you folks on here who want tougher gun laws don't even know very much about the guns you want out of my hands. You say assault weapons, when you really mean semi-auto weapons. Many many hunting rifles are semi-auto and are not called assault rifles just because they have a more acceptable look to the public eye. To say that making it harder to buy guns would make the world a better place really shows a lack of understanding of the craftiness of evil people. I would also say you who think we should bann guns that are made for killing more than one person quikly have a blindness to all of the true stories of people who's lives and loved ones have been saved because they were able to buy such guns. It may not happen to make the news every time, but it happens. Fully automatic rifles are not what I am talking about here, although I think they could have their place. I am talking about semi-auto rifles and pistols. You also tend to talk lost about all the crimes and death caused by guns without ever mentioning all the lives that have been saved because someone had a gun to stop the bad guy. How about you learn a little about those cases and how it would have tured out much worse for the good guys had they not had a gun. You can't deny the facts when that happens unless you blind yourself to them. I have loved ones who I am willing to protect. I will do that the best I can. I will not take the second best way so you can feel better. I have that right because I live in the U.S.A. Your fear, speculation, and lack of education on the matter will not change my mind. If you don't like the way it is here, there are many places around the world where you can go and give up your freedoms. In the end, it is your right and mine here and thats that. Take it or leave it.

I almost get that. When you become a felon you give up some of your rights, and that is one of them.If someone wants to carry a weapon bad enough, they probably will if they have a permit or not but, it does give more of a chance for enforcing this. This probably sounds like I'm just looking for a way to justify the permits and I probably am but, I live in Florida where if you are not a felon, you can get your permit without much of a problem. The cost sucks but beyond that, all they do is make sure your familiar with the law and that you can operate a weapon.Basically, if your right to have a weapon has not been taken away because of a felony, you can have a gun at home or in your car without anything but, to carry it you have to have a permit. With all that said,,,I get your point..

Why exactly do we need carry permits to exercise our 2nd amendment rights?? I don't need a permit to give a speech and exercise my 1st amendment rights. Our constitutional rights got hosed the day carry permits became law.

I don't understand people sometimes. Yes, Crimminals will sometimes get concealed weapons permits but, stopping them from having the permit will not automatically make them not carry a weapon. But a law abiding citizen might not carry without the permit. The point remains the same, guns can't kill people without somebody waiting to pull the trigger and if a person that wants to do bad things with a gun, wants a gun, they will get a gun. Its these bad people that will still be using guns no matter what the law is. It's the law abiding citizens that try to obey the law that will go unarmed. As for assault rifles, I don't even know what to say to you about that. I don't think that the only thing they can be used for is hunting or target practice but I also don't think that most people that get these legally bought them to kill people, they just want to show off to thier friends and bragging to your friends about having an assault rifle is no more dangerous than bragging to your friend that you got assault riffles banned IF YOU DON'T PLAN ON SHOOTING ANYONE. . Once again guns can't kill people without someone to pull the trigger ( accidents excluded ).There are always exeptions but, IMHO it doesn't matter what weapons you own, if you want to hurt someone with a weapon it doesn't matter if you have a permit or a legal gun but, the rest of us would like to legally protect ourselves against them. Just because I can, I hope I never have to.

As Ann Coulter says, When you need a gun, nothing else will do.

I defended myself and family with pistol in hand to force a drug dealer from my yard. Yeah, guns work.

Remember, the 2nd Amendment gives EVERY American the right.

An aaault weapons are made to kill people??Correct.Hard to believe that some of the people in this country actually believe the only reason to own a gun is to go hunting or target pratice.Ignorance abounds and it will be a miricle if we are to survive as a country with all our freedoms intact.
