Not voting won't help either

What would happen if officials held an election, and nobody voted?

This actually happened Tuesday last week in Missouri City, Mo., where one city councilman got to keep his seat, not only because he ran unopposed, but because nobody came out to vote — not even himself.

The bureaucrats were apparently shocked that nobody showed up to vote in Joe Selle’s ward, Ward 3, and in another ward, only two people showed up and voted.

Selle’s excuse? He forgot it was election day.

City Attorney Steven Wolcott said Missouri City operates under a unique charter approved by the state Legislature in 1859. The charter provides that Selle can hold his office unless “another party is successfully elected and qualified,” Wolcott said.

“But I’m not happy that nobody voted in an election,” Wolcott added. — KMBC-TV

The town has a population of about 300, of which 197 are registered voters. In Ward 3, 34 are registered to vote. Not one could be bothered.

The next time you start thinking that one person can’t make a difference, remember Joe Selle of Missouri City, Mo., who didn’t even bother to vote in his own election. One person just writing in another name would have swung the election.

More to the point, not keeping a close eye on what the government bureaucrats are doing is how America got into the mess it’s in today. All 34 of those non-voters should be ashamed of themselves for failing to be eternally vigilant — as should most of the other 300 million of us.

This should end the argument on whether voting is a good thing or not over on the FTL BBS.

In West Virginia you now have to register with the state 42 days before an election to be a write in candidate.

I have to agree with George Carlin on this, theres no logic in the “if you didn’t vote you don’t have a right to complain” claim. because if you voted, and you voted for a dishonest, corrupted, crappy, politician then you are responsible for what they have done, you voted them in, you have no right to complain. now, I would like to see a none of the above option. to show voters are interested, just not in the crap they parade in front of us.
