A few comments come to mind:

1) Why does the government have to protect every citizen in the once-great nation of America?

2) As far as protecting the borders, explain to me why the border patrol needs access to my tax and firearms records? After a recent trip to Canada by car, they confirmed they have the exact wording of my tax records and know all the guns I've purchased. Far better privacy could be maintained by confirmations of yes/no, not the full details.

3) I believe the "stop screwing around in other countries" could be implemented by closing military bases in many countries we assisted in World War 2. If America wasn't poised to strike globally, other countries wouldn't be ready to strike back. I'm pretty sure Japan and the European Union are able to defend themselves. If they aren't, they can request our help. This would also serve to limit the size and budgets of the American Military. This in turn has a reduction effect on the government as a whole.

4) Return to the human intel aspect of intelligence gathering. The CIA/FBI knew of the 9/11 hijackers plans long in advance. Those in power ignored it. Now we have stupid criminals trumped up to be global masterminds when they ponder blowing up JFK in completely illogical ways. How was every 'plot' stopped so far? Old fashioned police work involving committed members of law enforcement. Too bad the police don't know they're being played for the press.

5) Reduce and repeal most tax subsidies. It'll hurt in the short-run, but in the long-run it will build a far stronger economy. Rather than one built on personal debt. Government debt is good. It means they are spending for the future on large, infrastructure projects.

6) Stop Congress, and most of America, from thinking in incredibly short time lines. Thinking quarterly and 'till my next election' is killing America. Think about long term plans and strategies to get there.

7) Implement far more transparency in government. They can peer into every aspect of our lives, but we cannot into the individuals in power. Power corrupts; we know this. Build oversight into the system.

These are just a few of the ideas floating in my head. I may move to Cascadia or the 2nd Vermont Republic and help them secede from the union. Heck, Alberta and Quebec are ready to abandon Canada.

I find it interesting that, while thousands of illegal immigrants are allowed to run across our border (and the border patrol who try to stop them are getting sent to jail and punished for doing their jobs) the American people...those who have legal status in this country...are being put through hell trying to get over those same borders.

How does it work that I feel like a prisoner in this place that is supposed to be 'The Land of the Free'?

dd,
You make some excellent points. Allow me to make a comment, not on content, but on delivery.
Imagine standing in wind tunnel with millions in $20.00 bills blowing around. After awhile, the draw of the windfall would lose place to the frustration of the effort.
I applaud what you are trying to accomplish, but it is difficult to stay with you given your writing style. If you are serious in your intent, you have an obligation to the readers to present your ideas in a way that does not require them to expend so much time and energy mining them from the loquacious ore of your writing. Frankly, it is difficult to get the message out the spelling errors, grammatical gaffs, and poor paragraph construction.
Also, being one reader whose comments have occasionally run to considerable length, I run the risk of emulating Polonius when I suggest that "Brevity is the soul of wit."
All the best to you and yours…

citizen, your right BULLSHIT, thats a great name you have selected to use as your ID. Thanks for your spell chek, anyway.Yes by the way I do have a solution, but I was interested in Michaels` view. And I could quote others, as you have done, but that would only prove that I had no comment of my own. I also have the right to Question, in any fashion that I want under the same priviliges you have given this author, so Billshit as you call your self, suck on those eggs and keep hiding behind citizen.

Michael, thank you for your comment.I also have plenty of better plans, but I can not solve the whole thing by doing two things, I don`t believe God could even do that, so lets become real, we can handle the welfare problem as you say "GET RID OF IT” that is a no brainier. I agree that welfare is abused, and has become a tool for people to use as their private piggy bank. But tell that to the politicians and listen to them squeal especially the Democrats because they would not have any platform to run on or voters for that fact. By the way I am not a Republican either, and they have done nothing to prevent the abuse either so I do not give them any credit for allowing this farce to exist either.
Saying for us to stop screwing around in other countries’ affairs, is a lot to except with out challenging each issue concerning what we as a nation are SCREWING with. I agree in principle as to not force our beliefs upon any other country unless it is at the request of the absolute majority of its people or if there is a absolute chance that if we don’t it would lead to the destruction of our country. Your answers remind me of my own, and the turning point for me was while I watched a peaceful demonstration at Kent State University, Ohio turn into a ugly nightmare that to this day has personally affected my life and caused me to change my way of protesting about issues concerning the government because no one has ever won what they wanted by doing it that way. The only way I could win was to create a better mouse trap, not throw eggs , hold up signs or blast what I didn’t like about what our government was doing . But Michael, do you actually believe that by our government as you say “stop SCREWING AROUND IN OTHER COUNTRIES, will develop this Boom, peace and American Prosperity, and all this will eliminate terrorism and the immigration problem”. Where did you get those theories from, surely not from what you have been reporting.
The reason I challenge you is because you ask for financial support, from your readers, and guess what I am one of those individuals and I just happen to be looking for someone that I feel as well as my colleagues do about the individual that has the capability ( capacity potentiality, so forth) but most important is one with the tenaciousness, that I believe you keep hidden with in your dogma that you are trying to spread. Like I said above we have the mousetrap, and we are non political, so our program is ready both socially and financially.
See also 1. You can take the homeland out of the stupidity, but you can’t take the stupidity out of the homeland.
The government we have now was constituted to, among other things, provide for the common defense. So it says in the Preamble to the Constitution. It is with this in mind, in theory, that the 1. Department of Homeland Security was created. In whose theory?
So you posted this on Oct16, 2005 and much to my surprise you received no comments. You don’t like the name, well I would not have chosen that name either, but today this entity is under the umbrella of National Security the word HOMELAND just refers to our land America, I guess we could have called it American Security, then you could have used American Stupidity. Well at least you would be referring to more individuals, I was always taught that we are the government, and if we are not satisfied with how things are named, or run in our government then we work peacefully to change them. What about YOU WORKING WITH ALL THE ENERGY YOU HAVE TO LAMBAST THE GOVERNMENT, WORK JUST AS HARD TO CHANGE IT SO IT RUNS BETTER. At least in that direction the financial powers to be look more favorable in supporting your venture, or is that asking to much?
Your next comment:
“In concept, the idea of “homeland security” is a fine one. Protect the people of the homeland. Sure, I will buy that, if the price is right.”
Unfortunately, We the People are paying too much for too little security, and that’s what this site is all about, as you can clearly see by browsing the archives here. So you know everything that is going on concerning security within our Government especially Homeland Security, don’t bee a fool along with and all those other writers out their that also know everything going on. Maybe you are only being the fool or ponzi for what the Government wants all of you and your comrades to print maybe you are all caught up in a master Subterfuge, actually supporting everything you are claiming to be wrong.Michael , I will guarantee you, that if you and I argue about issues concerning the defamation of our government especially that of the Homeland Security ( National Security) we will definitely draw attention to this web site. But if maybe we start working for the same goal WHICH IS PROTECTING THE SECURITY OF EVERY INDIVIDUAL OF THIS THE GREATEST NATION IN THE WORLD

I'll respond too. “Criticism of government finds sanctuary in several portions of the 1st Amendment. It is part of the right of free speech. It embraces freedom of the press.”
-Hugo L. Black

I have heard this before, unless you have a complete solution, don't criticize anything. Bullshit. The author has the right to criticize. Your criticism of the authors words indicate a requirement for censorship in the absence of an acceptable solution. Oh, and learn to use spel chek: "espacially".

I have plenty of better plans. You can solve the whole thing by doing two things: Get rid of welfare, and stop screwing around in other countries' affairs. Boom, peace, and American prosperity. And no more terrorism or immigration "problem."

And of course I oppose everything the government does, because everything it does is evil.

Michael, you are very good at knocking things that concern the government espacially Homeland Security, but you , like the rest of the knockers never have a better plan. Matter of fact you don`t have any plan at all. Come on Michael lets here how you would secure our borders, protect our nation against a Terrorist, you sure know how to oppose every thing the government does.
