Thanks for the input. To Bob, a big shout out from Madame Defarge. Knit one, purl two! And throw your hands in the air for PR NY– a supporter of Internet anonymity and master/mistress of damning with faint praise. “The politicians are no less ethical here, than they are anyplace.” Couldn’t have put it better myself. Ditto for Claudio’s take on the cozy stench factor in New York politics. Also: someone pointed out via email that Tom Lehrer not Freud said “When correctly viewed everything is lewd”. Yup, Lehrer did use the line in his 1965 ditty “Smut”. But it was floating around in the Freudian jokesphere prior to his use. Ah, the brilliant Tom Lehrer. Now there was a cynic…

I wouldn’t say NY state government is “misrepresented” – local news media spend a lot of time decrying corruption and human rights abuses everywhere else in the world but under their noses. There is usually a long lag between the time the poop hits the fan because some local pol put their hand in the till (or somewhere else) and the time local media deign to notice. I think it’s a case of “be it ever so humble, there’s no stench like your own.”

Perhaps the problem isn’t cynicism but instead excessive self-regard.

Being native New Yorkers, we are often offended by the constant misrepresentation of our state and government.

We have no more reason to be cynical than any other large state.

Sure we have had our share of corruption, but is it really any worse than any large state?

The politicians are no less ethical here, than they are anyplace. In fact they may actually have more scrutiny given how high profile New York is.

No rational New Yorker could have ‘good cause’ to be cynical because of current events. Rational people should always put things into perspective and not be reactionary.

Ha! Crazy.
And I’ve heard people wonder out loud at what would drive someone to invent the guillotine.
The masses will take an incredible amount of abuse but boy when they turn ugly, the politicians will wish they had never been born. That’s been proven too many times to count.
Kinda funny, really. The circle of life.
