Thanks for your reply, Mike.

I’m curious to learn more about your position on the BSD vs GPL (i.e. permissive vs restrictive) debate, and why you chose the CC license that you did instead of a more permissive one (or public domain). I’m of the opinion that the permissive licenses are more in line with libertarian philosophy, including the Non-Aggression Principle.

Oh, and speaking of the FTL BBS – my efforts to implement a one-line fix I envision for the YouTube embedding URL bug through long-distance telekinesis have thus-far been unsuccessful. Any chance of someone with actual access to the server giving it a go before the decade is out?

“Intellectual property” as we know it is patently ridiculous. I don’t foresee that I would have any issues living in a world without it; indeed, I think people who create content, such as Gard and I, would be much better off.

That said, we’re living in a world where the majority of the people believe in intellectual property as some sort of god, much like the rest of government. I have to speak to them in terms they can understand, which is why I use tools like the GPL and Creative Commons.

I suppose that in theory I could use the state to go after someone who copied my content, but I have no desire whatsoever to do so. I’ve seen enough of the damage the MPAA and RIAA have done to know where that leads. Not to mention it would be wrong.

Intellectual property is not the simplest of issues, and a lot of libertarians still disagree. I myself am a Gradualist Anarcho-Capitalist, and I firmly believe that is is an artificial construct with no basis in natural or contractual law.

I guess Mike would disagree, because the Creative Commons icon on this page only allows NONCOMMERCIAL redistribution, so if a person quoting this has ads on his site Mike would be able to use the state to initiate aggression against that person… Hmmmmm…..
