NYPD police officer fired for blogging?

Officer Edward Polstein of the New York Police Department claims he was fired for running a Web site criticizing the department’s policies. Department officials, however, say he was fired for reneging on an early-retirement deal.

The site, known as NYPD RANT, is widely read by NYPD officers, family members, and the public at large. Postings at the site refer to 1 Police Plaza, NYPD headquarters, as the Puzzle Palace, an allusion to the National Security Agency (No Such Agency; Never Say Anything) headquarters in Fort Meade, Md.

The site, while not strictly a blog, started with Polstein posting his own personal rants. Other NYPD officers found the site and asked if they could post as well, and Polstein started the open forum format.
